BRIDGE Proof of Concept: 35 projects selected following two record-breaking calls

The first half of 2026 saw a record number of project submissions. BRIDGE has approved 35 innovative Proof of Concept projects across a range of fields.

The number of Proof of Concept projects submitted during the first half of 2026 doubled compared with the per-call average over the last nine years. This development reflects the growing interest in BRIDGE but is also part of a wider trend observed across the other funding schemes of the Swiss National Science Foundation and Innosuisse. In addition, it reflects an increasingly competitive environment for project leaders. In total, 35 of the 156 projects assessed were selected for a funding totalling 4.5 million Swiss francs, representing a success rate of 22 percent. The evaluation panel recommended funding for a wide variety of projects, covering areas such as medical technology, artificial intelligence, energy, agrotech, e-health, civil engineering and industrial design.

Unfolding the concrete of tomorrow

Unfold Form is a reusable formwork system developed at ETH Zurich by Lotte Luise Scheder-Bieschin that simplifies the construction of vaulted floors using unreinforced or low‑carbon concrete. Inspired by folded wooden structures, this technology reduces the amount of concrete required, CO₂ emissions and construction waste, while opening up new architectural possibilities. The project now aims to turn a lab-validated concept into a system ready for pilot deployment in the construction industry.

Keeping medicines cool at all times

Travelling with temperature-sensitive medicines remains a challenge for many patients. At the Eastern Switzerland University of Applied Sciences (OST), Lukas Reitemeier and his team are developing a portable cooling technology capable of keeping these medications cool for several days, even in extreme heat. Compact and linked to a mobile app, this future device could make the transport of medicines safer and give patients greater freedom, both in their daily lives and when travelling.

Changes to BRIDGE Proof of Concept coming in 2027

The BRIDGE programme is evolving to better meet the growing demand for innovative projects. Further details, along with the specific changes to the funding programme, will be announced this autumn. The next BRIDGE Proof of Concept call will take place until 1 December 2026.
